Be|tschuana, Be|tschuanen, Volk der Südostbantu im südlichen Afrika; rd. 4,1 Mio. Tswana in etwa 65 Stämmen, darunter einige assimilierte Ndebele und Nord-Sotho, leben v. a. im Nordwesten der Republik Südafrika (3 Mio., davon 1,7 Mio. in den Provinzen Nord-West und Nord-Kap) und als Staatsvolk in Botswana (1,1 Mio.), außerdem in Simbabwe und Namibia. Die traditionelle Wirtschaft (Ackerbau mit Rinderhaltung) verliert gegenüber Dienstleistungen und Arbeit in Industrie und Bergbau an Bedeutung. Die meisten Tswana sind heute Christen; v. a. in Botswana blieben jedoch viele Tswana Anhänger der traditionellen Religion. - Die Sprache der Tswana, das Tswana, gehört zu den Bantusprachen. Es hat mehrere Dialekte, deren sprachliche Nähe zum Sotho bis zur gegenseitigen Verstehbarkeit reicht.
